Some History
Franklinton, North Carolina, was established as Franklin Depot in 1839 and renamed in 1842, honoring Benjamin Franklin. The town is home to historic sites, including a 1759 Kearney family home, one of Franklin County's oldest residences. Franklinton was also the location of Albion Academy, an influential African-American school founded in 1879, which later became Franklinton Elementary School.
The town boasts a rich industrial history with the Sterling Cotton Mill, established in 1895 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Franklinton has also been recognized as a Tree City USA community since 1985, reflecting its commitment to preserving green spaces.
